“...It was a pleasure dealing with a contractor who does what he says he is going to do, when he says he is going to do it, and for the price he quoted. My friends were correct when they said you were the best painter. Thank you for an excellent, clean, quality job...” read more...

Windows installation

Adding or replacing windows in a home is a great way to increase value, energy efficiency, function and overall appeal. Older windows tend to be drafty and do not block outside noise well. They can become harder to operate with time, need frequent repainting and don`t help out much when it comes to energy bills. In some instances, rooms needing more light or an update can benefit from an added window or skylight. Whatever your situation, a few simple guidelines can help you make good decisions.

The first thing you’ll want to do is assess your needs. Decide if you will be replacing all the windows in the home or just some. And if you are planning to add windows, it might require additional construction. Proper assessment of the project helps to minimize surprises down the road. Consulting with a professional is always the best option to avoid future mishaps. One window can take a contractor less than a couple of hours for a standard replacement, where a whole home usually takes one to several days depending on the number of windows and additional work involved. If it’s a bigger job, you may want to plan on having a place to be out of the contractors way.

The next thing is to decide what type of windows you require. Basic types are double hung which raise up and down, casement windows that rotate open and closed by turning a handle, sliders and picture windows. If you are not knowledgeable about windows, it`s time to start doing some research and talking with a professional about all the types and options available to you.

There are several options to consider for the glass, like special UV coatings or E-glass. Such coatings prevent damaging UV rays from fading carpets and furnishings. They also provide benefit to air conditioned homes by lessening the heating effect of the suns rays as they enter the home. Having the space between multi paned windows filled with argon gas as opposed to air is also recommended. Argon is denser than air and creates a much better barrier to heat and cold transfer. Together, such enhancements give the best value in efficiency and performance and better meet the ENERGY STAR guidelines. Other basic options range from insulated frame cavities, night locks and tilt outs to more esthetic things like latch styles, decorative grids and custom moldings. Keep in mind that many of these options add to the cost of a basic window.

After seeing how windows are such a critical part of a home and the value they add, the best way to guarantee correct installation, continued performance and satisfying warranty requirements that can in most cases be transferred to future owners is to hire a professional licensed contractor to complete the job. Doing a little homework ahead of time goes a long way in making a purchase such as new windows a hassle free, rewarding and beneficial experience. Not only in the short term by living in a more comfortable and functional home, but adding value and savings for years to come.
